As Senegal prepares to open its 2026 World Cup campaign against France, head coach Pape Thiaw has revealed a bold vision for the continent: two African nations meeting in the semi-finals for the first time in history.
“Mon rêve serait de voir deux nations africaines se rencontrer en demi-finale” , Thiaw said on the eve of Tuesday’s Group I clash with France, which is being billed as a rematch of Senegal’s famous 1-0 shock win over the reigning world champions at the 2002 tournament.
From 2002 Hero to Head Coach
Few understand Senegal’s World Cup journey better than the 45-year-old. In 2002, Thiaw delivered one of the most iconic assists in African football history: a back-heel that set up Henri Camara’s golden goal against Sweden in the round of 16, sending Senegal to the quarter-finals – the continent’s deepest run until Morocco’s 2022 semi-final landmark .
That performance cemented the Lions of Teranga’s status as trailblazers. Now, from the other side of the touchline, Thiaw is tasked with guiding Senegal to a fourth consecutive World Cup appearance, with hopes of surpassing that 2002 feat.
“Toutes les 10 équipes représentent le continent avec dignité, ce qui me rend très fier” , he said, expressing admiration for the record number of African qualifiers. “Ils se sont tous battus avec fierté pour obtenir leur place” .
Record African Representation
A record 10 African sides have qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament, thanks to CAF’s quota rising from five to nine automatic slots — nearly doubling Africa’s guaranteed presence . The qualified teams are: Algeria, Cape Verde (making their debut), DR Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia .
Africa’s Semi-Final Breakthrough at Qatar 2022
Africa has already broken new ground at the World Cup’s business end. At Qatar 2022, Morocco became the first African and first Arab nation to reach a World Cup semi-final . The Atlas Lions stunned Belgium 2-0 in the group stage and eliminated Portugal 1-0 in the quarter-finals before bowing out to France .
That achievement fuelled belief across the continent that African sides can challenge for the trophy itself. Thiaw’s ambition of an all-African semi-final would mark a dramatic escalation — guaranteeing the continent’s first finalist — and may not be as far-fetched as it once seemed.
Thiaw’s Path to the Helm
Named interim head coach in October 2024, Thiaw quickly made the role permanent, succeeding long-time boss Aliou Cissé, his former team-mate from the 2002 golden generation . He had previously led Senegal’s second-string side to victory at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2022 — a tournament restricted to domestic-based players .
In January 2026, Thiaw added a major title to his collection: a 1-0 extra-time victory over Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations final, his first major trophy as senior head coach . The triumph, however, was overshadowed by controversy when Senegal were stripped of the title by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on 18 March 2026 after players left the pitch in protest over a late penalty awarded to Morocco . Senegal has since appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) .
“The CAN is Behind Us”
Speaking ahead of the France match, Thiaw was clear that Senegal have moved on. “Je ne vais pas revenir sur la CAN, on est champion d’Afrique, la CAN est derrière nous” , he said. “Now we are at the World Cup. We’ve prepared well and we are focused on tomorrow’s match.”
A “Golden Generation” Ready to Deliver
Senegal boast a formidable squad packed with Premier League and European talent. Key players include captain Kalidou Koulibaly (Al-Hilal, KSA), midfield engine Idrissa Gana Gueye (Everton, ENG) and captain-elect Sadio Mané (Al-Nassr, KSA) .
After finishing top of Group B in qualifying with seven wins and three draws, Senegal are dreaming of a deep run in a tournament that will be played across the United States, Canada and Mexico . “Nous avons fixé nos objectifs et nous travaillerons avec humilité et courage pour les atteindre” , Thiaw said. “We have set our goals and will work with humility and courage to reach them.”
Senegal open their World Cup campaign against France on Tuesday.
