ADB assures stronger growth after GHc478.5 million profit

The Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) PLC has posted a profit before tax of GH¢478.5 million for the nine months ended 30 September 2026, up from GH¢447.5 million in the same period of 2025, as Managing Director Edward Ato Sarpong assured stakeholders of continued efforts to build a stronger, more resilient institution focused on supporting Ghana’s productive sectors.

Profit after tax rose 6.9 per cent to GH¢301.7 million from GH¢282.3 million a year earlier, according to the bank’s unaudited financial statements published on 29 October 2026. The results underscore progress in ADB’s transformation agenda following years of financial challenges, including a period of losses and a deeply negative capital position that required significant government support and recapitalisation.

Customer deposits grew strongly by 19.5 per cent to GH¢15.36 billion from GH¢12.85 billion, an increase of about GH¢2.51 billion. Total assets expanded by approximately 25 per cent to GH¢20.28 billion from GH¢16.22 billion, while shareholders’ funds rose sharply from GH¢1.56 billion to GH¢2.76 billion — a gain of around 77 per cent. Accumulated losses narrowed from GH¢1.70 billion to GH¢1.52 billion, and statutory reserves increased from GH¢340.7 million to GH¢534 million.

Key prudential ratios improved markedly. The Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) climbed to 27.41 per cent from just 0.49 per cent in September 2025, while the liquidity ratio strengthened to 145.83 per cent from 130 per cent. Interest expenses fell sharply by 36.1 per cent to GH¢361.3 million from GH¢565.4 million, a reduction of roughly GH¢204 million even as the deposit base expanded. The non-performing loans (NPL) ratio eased from 70.13 per cent to 66.32 per cent, though it remains elevated and a focus for further reduction.

Mr Sarpong described the performance as evidence of steady progress in strengthening the bank’s fundamentals, enhancing stakeholder confidence and delivering sustainable growth.

“Our financial performance reflects the steady progress we are making in building a stronger, more resilient, and competitive bank. The growth in profitability, significant increase in customer deposits, and our capital and liquidity positions demonstrate our commitment to financial discipline, prudent management and sustainable value creation,” he said. “We remain focused on consolidating these gains and positioning ADB as a trusted financial partner for businesses, individuals and the productive sectors of Ghana’s economy.”

He added that the bank’s improved capital position provides a stronger foundation for pursuing strategic objectives while maintaining prudent risk management. “Our goal is to build an institution that is not only profitable, but financially sound, customer-focused and capable of delivering long-term value. We are determined to sustain this positive momentum while remaining faithful to our mandate of supporting agriculture, agribusiness and the broader Ghanaian economy.”

ADB, a state-owned specialised bank, was established to mobilise resources and provide credit and other financial services to the agricultural sector and related value chains. In recent years it has undergone a major turnaround, including a substantial government deposit for shares that helped restore its capital base after earlier periods of high NPLs and losses. By the end of 2025 the bank had returned
