President Mahama cuts sod for new Ghana Armed Forces accommodation project

President John Mahama has cut the sod for the construction of a new accommodation project for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), marking a major step toward improving the welfare of military personnel and modernising barracks infrastructure.

The sod-cutting ceremony was held on Friday, January 23, at the forecourt of the Public Relations Department of the Ghana Armed Forces at Burma Camp, as part of activities marking the GAF’s end-of-year West African Social Activities (WASSA).

The project is part of a comprehensive barracks regeneration strategy aimed at upgrading housing facilities at Burma Camp. Under the plan, existing low-rise residential structures will be replaced with modern high-rise buildings, a development expected to free up more than half of the land currently occupied within the camp.

Construction is expected to commence with a self-help fundraising initiative scheduled for April this year, which will support the development of an initial 200 housing units at Burma Camp.

As part of the ceremony, President Mahama also presented a fleet of vehicles to the Ghana Armed Forces to enhance their operational effectiveness. The vehicles included pickup trucks, buses and Land Cruisers.

The event was attended by several high-profile officials, including the Minister for Finance and Acting Minister for Defence, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson; the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka; and the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General William Agyapong, along with other distinguished guests.

Addressing the gathering, President Mahama praised the Ghana Armed Forces for their vital role in safeguarding peace and security within a sub-region facing increasingly complex security challenges. He noted that Ghana’s standing as a beacon of stability and democratic resilience is largely attributable to the professionalism, discipline and sacrifices of military personnel.

He further highlighted the Armed Forces’ contributions to national defence, support for civil authorities, humanitarian assistance and overall national development.

In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General William Agyapong, expressed gratitude to President Mahama for his continued support, encouragement and leadership, which he said have been instrumental in enabling the Armed Forces to effectively carry out their constitutional mandate.

On behalf of the military high command and personnel, he also thanked the government for its sustained commitment to the welfare, operational readiness and capacity-building needs of the Ghana Armed Forces.
