NPP flagbearer hopeful Dr Bryan Acheampong has issued a stark warning that the New Patriotic Party could face a terminal split if it elects either Dr Mahamudu Bawumia or Kennedy Agyapong as its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.
Addressing delegates in the Obom, Amasaman and Trobu constituencies on Saturday, January 17, 2026, Dr Acheampong presented himself as the only candidate capable of healing the party’s deep internal divisions and preventing its collapse.
The remarks came at the end of his two-day “Unity Tour” of the Greater Accra Region, ahead of the NPP’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.
Dr Acheampong argued that tensions between supporters of Dr Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong have become so bitter that either camp would struggle to rally behind the other in a general election.
He challenged delegates to consider whether genuine reconciliation would be possible if either of the two frontrunners emerged victorious.
“Who here believes that if Kennedy Agyapong wins, Abronye DC and supporters of Dr Bawumia will support him for us to win power?” he asked. Turning the argument around, he added that a Dr Bawumia victory would be equally divisive.
“I am the only one who can unify this party for victory in 2028,” he declared, urging delegates to back his candidacy.
Dr Acheampong also reflected on the party’s defeat in the last general election, revealing that internal wrangling even disrupted the post-election “Thank You Tour,” which was eventually abandoned due to infighting.
He said some party members were removed from the tour bus and blamed for contributing to the party’s loss through their public utterances.
The reference to the “bus” has since become symbolic of the entrenched factionalism within the NPP, underscoring the depth of internal tensions that continue to shape the party’s 2026 presidential contest.
