Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has held a significant engagement with members of the Ghanaian community in Potomac, Maryland, as part of her official visit to the United States. The event, hosted by Ghana’s Ambassador to the US, Mr. Victor Smith, served as a platform for the Vice President to outline the government’s achievements, challenges, and future vision for the nation.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Vice President, Professor Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged the indispensable role that Ghanaians abroad play in the national economy, particularly through remittances and investment. She assured the diaspora that the government remains deeply mindful of their interests, appreciates their sacrifices, and takes pride in the positive image they project of Ghana on the global stage.
Economic Stability and Fiscal Discipline
Addressing the economic situation at home, the Vice President spoke candidly about the difficult circumstances inherited by the current administration. She emphasized that stabilizing the economy has required significant sacrifices from all Ghanaians. However, she expressed optimism, noting that with decisive leadership, prudent management, and the resilience of the Ghanaian people, the government is gradually restoring macroeconomic stability.
“We are seeing clear signs of recovery,” Professor Opoku-Agyemang stated. “Economic growth has exceeded expectations, inflation is easing, and the Cedi has shown signs of stability.”
She highlighted the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline, pointing to a leaner administration as proof. “We are demonstrating our commitment by operating with fewer ministers, several of whom are holding parliamentary and ministerial responsibilities without the support of deputies,” she explained.
Infrastructure, Health, and Education
The Vice President reiterated that the government is prioritizing interventions that serve the common good. She mentioned significant investments in road infrastructure, increased funding for Senior High Schools, and expanded access to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Additionally, she noted that increased resources are being channeled to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies through the District Assemblies Common Fund, with clear guidelines ensuring funds are directed toward specific community needs.
On healthcare, Professor Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, which is complemented by the Free Primary Healthcare initiative. Together, she said, these programs aim to treat non-communicable diseases and strengthen preventive healthcare services across the country.
Youth Empowerment and Sectoral Reforms
Recognizing the diverse skills and employment needs of the youth, the Vice President discussed the government’s efforts through the Youth Employment Agency and other job-creation programs. She noted that reforms are underway across several sectors, including energy, industry, and petroleum, to improve efficiency, strengthen local capacity, and ensure reliable power generation to support economic productivity.
Debt Restructuring and Future Resilience
Looking ahead, Professor Opoku-Agyemang stated that Ghana is advancing toward completing its debt restructuring process. She also mentioned the strengthening of mechanisms such as the Sinking Fund to better prepare the nation for future economic shocks.
“We remain focused on confronting our difficulties honestly and on building greater resilience into the economy,” she assured the gathering.
Call to the Diaspora
The Vice President concluded by encouraging the Ghanaian community in the US to continue playing an active role in nation-building. She called on them to remain partners in development, leveraging their skills, resources, and networks to support Ghana’s growth trajectory.
The event underscored the government’s commitment to engaging with the diaspora and fostering a collaborative relationship between Ghana and its citizens abroad.
