Real Madrid election shock: Businessman Riquelme secures €194m aval, claims “Club needs change”

The race for the presidency of Real Madrid has taken a dramatic turn. Entrepreneur Enrique Riquelme has officially secured the massive bank guarantee required to challenge the long-standing reign of Florentino Pérez, sources confirmed today.

Riquelme, the 37-year-old president of the energy giant Cox, confirmed this Monday that he has the financial backing—valued at approximately €187-194 million—necessary to formalize his candidacy . This sum represents 15% of the club’s annual budget, a legal requirement that must be backed by personal assets and has historically deterred opponents .

Despite warnings from close associates that his chances of defeating the veteran leader are slim, Riquelme believes the timing is right for a historic shift at the Santiago Bernabéu.

“We have not been given much time to organize something that really makes sense and is good for Real Madrid,” Riquelme stated during a charity event in Madrid . “If we take the step, it will be with something exciting for the new Real Madrid of the next 10, 15, or 20 years.”

A David vs. Goliath Battle?

The election, triggered unexpectedly by Pérez last week, comes after a turbulent season for the club. Real Madrid finished the campaign without a major trophy for the second consecutive year, leading to fan protests and reported dressing room unrest .

Florentino Pérez, 79, called the snap elections as a strategic move to counter media criticism and what he calls an “absurd campaign” against his management . He has dismissed Riquelme’s request for more preparation time, famously retorting: “When I ran in the 2000 elections, I didn’t ask for more time. I ran and I won” .

However, Riquelme argues that after 20 years without a contested election, the club needs a long-term alternative. The Alicante-born businessman has a high-profile background. Known as the “King of the Sun” in business circles, his company Cox recently closed a $4.2 billion deal to acquire Iberdrola México . His father was also a board member during Ramón Calderón’s presidency, giving him deep ties to the club’s structure .

The Clock is Ticking

The deadline for submitting official candidacies is this Thursday, May 23 .

Riquelme has given himself a 48-to-72-hour deadline to decide whether to officially throw his hat in the ring . While he has the money, he admits he is racing against time to build a competitive sports project, including potential sporting directors and coaching staff.

“We are not going to waste time,” Riquelme insisted. The decision now rests on whether he can build a “winning project” in just a few days .

If no other candidate meets the strict financial criteria, Pérez will be re-elected unopposed for the sixth consecutive time . However, if Riquelme finalizes his paperwork, Madridistas could face their first real electoral battle in two decades.
