England’s World Cup dream turns into a nightmare: Tuchel furious over paper thin hotel walls & pleasure noises

Just weeks before kicking off their World Cup campaign, the England national team finds itself embroiled in an unexpected off-field crisis. The FA is scrambling to mitigate a bizarre yet critical threat to the nation’s hopes of glory: the lack of soundproofing at their luxury base camp.

Manager Thomas Tuchel, a self-confessed “sleep obsessive,” is reportedly furious after a deep dive into user reviews for the team’s chosen hotel, The Inn at Meadowbrook in Kansas City .

What the German tactician discovered has left the FA in a state of panic. While the hotel boasts rooms costing upwards of $300 a night, guests have torn it apart online—not for its service, but for its acoustics.

“We’ve stayed here twice and both times were shocked by the lack of soundproofing. We could hear the ‘pleasurable activities’ of a couple in the room next door,” one guest, Frank Banfield, wrote in a 2024 review .

Other complaints describe beds “as hard as a rock” requiring chiropractic appointments, “flat and terrible” pillows, and floors so thin you can hear neighbors walking above .

For Tuchel, who has previously brought in meditation and sleep experts to gain a competitive edge, this is a red line. The German manager, known for his meticulous tactical planning, considers sleep quality the single most important pillar of athletic performance .

An SOS to the Sleep Scientists

With the squad set to arrive shortly, the Football Association has launched a logistical rescue mission.

According to BILD and The Sun, the FA is now assembling “Special Sleep Kits” for every member of the squad, including stars like Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham .

These kits are not your standard eye-masks from the airport. They are hyper-engineered recovery systems designed to block out the chaos of the hotel and the heat of the US summer:

· Custom Mattress Toppers: Lightweight foam layers designed to negate the “rock-hard” hotel beds, tailored to the specific weight and body shape of each player .
· Cooling Gel Pillows: Specialized pillows to regulate core body temperature during humid Midwest nights .
· Ergonomic Sleep Masks: Contoured masks that block out 100% of light without putting pressure on the eyelids .
· Heavy-Duty Earplugs: Designed to provide complete acoustic sealing to block out “external noise” (the FA’s polite euphemism for the reported “pleasure noises”) .

“We try to take the edge off things, together as a team, to create a schedule that allows what I call ‘recovery sleep’,” said Dr. Luke Gupta, a performance innovation consultant working with the squad .

The FA is leaving nothing to chance. The squad is also being encouraged to bring their own blankets from home to replicate the familiarity of their own beds, while framed photos of family will be placed in rooms to provide emotional comfort .

‘No Amount of Soundproofing Can Stop Noise’

The hotel management has attempted to defend their establishment. In a statement responding to the backlash over the “pleasure noises,” a representative told The Sun: “No amount of soundproofing can stop noise, though ours was designed well above the industry standard. We’re sorry that you lost sleep” .

However, for Tuchel, apologies are irrelevant. He has already enlisted sleep scientists from the UK Sports Institute to ensure that, even if the walls are thin, his players’ focus remains sharp.

England kicks off their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17 . If the team goes all the way this summer, they might have to thank a pair of earplugs.
