The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has issued a stinging rebuke against Minority Leader and Effutu Member of Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, over comments he made about the judiciary.
In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, the association accused the MP of making disparaging remarks that undermine the integrity of judicial officers in the country.
While the GBA’s full statement did not immediately detail the exact quotes that triggered the backlash, sources indicate that the association found Afenyo-Markin’s language “unbecoming” of a senior lawmaker and a member of the legal profession. The GBA insisted that comments questioning the conduct or credibility of judges are an attack on the rule of law.
“The Association views the said comments as an affront to the independence of the judiciary,” the statement read, according to reports monitored by otecfmghana.com. The GBA is demanding an unconditional retraction of the statements and a formal apology.
This is not the first time Afenyo-Markin has clashed with judicial authorities. The Effutu MP, known for his fiery advocacy on the floor of Parliament, has previously been sanctioned by the GBA for professional misconduct.
As of the time of publication, the Minority Leader had not issued an official response to the GBA’s latest censure.
