President John Dramani Mahama is set to return to the Accra International Airport (AIA) on Thursday, August 27, 2026, to cut the sod for a new multi-tiered, multi-purpose car park and airport hotels complex. The project forms part of a broader strategy to expand and modernise the airport’s facilities while providing additional commercial and hospitality services for travellers and visitors.
President Mahama is renowned for his investments in mega, world-class infrastructure. His administration delivered Terminal 3 at the Accra International Airport, the massive MPS Terminal at the Tema Harbour, and secured US$400 million for the Tema-Mpakadan Railway Project.
The new development will feature a seven-storey car park with more than 2,000 parking bays. The project also includes two hotels—one a luxury hotel open to the general public, and the other a budget airport hotel dedicated to accommodating passengers affected by flight cancellations, delays, or grounded aircraft.
Additional facilities include a pedestrian connector linking the complex to the airport terminal, a shopping mall with a food court, retail outlets, and office spaces for rental, a sky lounge for entertainment, and a sky observatory offering visitors views of aircraft landings and take-offs.
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) noted that the existing Terminal 3 car park, with space for only 513 vehicles, is insufficient for current passenger numbers. The contractor has already begun mobilising to site, and the project is expected to be completed within 24 months, financed through the Airport Infrastructure Development Charge—a levy on departing passengers introduced in April 2026.
