At just 33 years old, Millicent Yeboah Amankwah has etched her name into the political history of Ghana. Born on 22 July 1992, she is not only the youngest Member of Parliament in the current Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic but also a trailblazer who has broken a three-decade-long electoral jinx in the Sunyani West Constituency.
A native of Odumase-Sunyani in the Bono Region, Amankwah represents the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Her journey to the legislature is one of grit, academic excellence, and strategic political timing. She attended Notre Dame Girls’ Senior High School before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in 2016. Determined to deepen her expertise in governance and legal affairs, she later obtained a Graduate Diploma in Law from the University of Law in the United Kingdom in 2022.
Amankwah’s political ambition became evident in August 2019 when she contested the NDC parliamentary primaries for Sunyani West. In a fiercely contested race, she defeated seasoned opponents Justice Samuel Adjei and Abdullai Yah to secure the party’s ticket. Five years later, in the 2024 General Election, she faced the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, a well-established figure in the constituency. Against expectations, Amankwah polled 26,828 votes, representing 57.64% of valid votes cast, handing the NPP a historic defeat.
Her victory is particularly significant because she has won the Sunyani West parliamentary seat for the NDC for the first time since 1992, ending nearly 32 years of NPP dominance in the constituency. Political analysts describe her win as a clear signal of a generational shift in Ghanaian politics.
Amankwah is also part of an exclusive group within Parliament: the “Class of 1992.” She is one of four MPs born that year, making them the youngest set of legislators in the current House. The others are Issah Atta (MP for Sagnarigu, born 2nd May 1992), Sulemana Alhassan (MP for Yunyoo, born 6th May 1992), and Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah (MP for Ahafo Ano South West, born 8th May 1992). Among them, Amankwah remains the youngest by a margin of several weeks.
Beyond her legislative duties, Amankwah is being celebrated as a rising female leader and a role model for young women in politics. While she keeps her private life largely out of the spotlight, it is publicly known that she is single and fully dedicated to her parliamentary work and constituency development.
As the Ninth Parliament settles into business, all eyes will be on Millicent Yeboah Amankwah—the young, bold, and history-making woman from Sunyani West.
