Mahama,First Lady to grace opening of historic World Assemblies of God Congress in Accra

President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama will join global church leaders and thousands of delegates in Accra on October 14, 2026, for the opening ceremony of the 10th Triennial World Assemblies of God Congress — a historic gathering marking the first time the event is being held in Africa.

The announcement was made by Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, October 1. Both the President and the First Lady are members of the Ghana branch of the denomination.

“The most prominent on the list is His Excellency the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama. It is common knowledge that the President is a member of Assemblies of God, Ghana. What is uncommon is his tremendous support for the World Congress,” Rev. Wengam said.

The three-day congress, scheduled for October 14–16, will hold its morning sessions at the Black Star Square from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., while evening revival rallies will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium. The evening programmes are free and will feature performances and ministry from artists including Joe Mettle, Sinach and Dunsin Oyekan, alongside a 500-member Congress Mass Choir.

According to Rev. Wengam, 18 Ghanaian Ministers of State and other high-profile personalities have confirmed their participation, alongside global leaders of the Assemblies of God Fellowship.

Among the international guests expected is the Global Chairman of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship and General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Singapore, Rev. Dominic Yeo. Former President of Malawi and former General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Malawi, Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, and his wife are also expected to attend.

Rev. Wengam described Ghana’s hosting of the congress as a historic milestone, noting that it is the first time in the 115-year history of the Assemblies of God Fellowship that the global gathering is being held in Africa. The 9th Triennial Congress was held in Madrid, Spain, in 2023.

The World Assemblies of God Fellowship, a cooperative body of self-governing national fellowships, was established in 1989 and now comprises more than 140 member organizations. Globally, the Assemblies of God has grown to over 88 million members, 437,000 pastors and more than 451,000 local churches, making it one of the largest Protestant denominations in the world. Africa alone accounts for an estimated 20 million members.

Assemblies of God, Ghana, has also experienced rapid growth since its establishment in 1931. The denomination currently has 10,077 local branches nationwide and more than 1.2 million members. Rev. Wengam was re-elected in August 2026 with nearly 90 percent of the vote during the church’s 32nd Biennial General Council Meeting.

The 2026 congress will be held under the theme, “COMMISSIONED: One Mandate, Every Nation,” which Rev. Wengam said reflects the denomination’s goal of strengthening its global mission. The gathering will focus on church health, empowering the next generation and pursuing greater revival.

A central focus will be the MM33 initiative — an ambitious global vision to plant one million Assemblies of God churches worldwide by 2033. The African church has been tasked with planting 300,000 of those churches by the target date.

Rev. Wengam said the event is also expected to create economic opportunities for Ghana by attracting tourists and investors and boosting activity in the hospitality and other sectors. Local businesses, transport operators, food vendors and petty traders are also expected to benefit from the influx of visitors.

With delegates and visitors travelling from more than 100 countries, the congress is expected to attract more than 10,000 participants for its morning sessions alone. It represents the largest international religious gathering ever hosted in Ghana, positioning the country as a gateway for continental and global Christian engagement.

Rev. Wengam called on the Ghanaian media to support the congress through sustained coverage and to help promote Ghana’s image as the country hosts the international gathering.
