The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced the complete restoration of electricity to all areas affected by a major system disturbance that plunged large parts of the country into darkness on Thursday morning.
In a statement issued on Friday, August 21, 2026, the power transmission utility confirmed that supply had been fully restored to all affected regions by 12:03 p.m. on Thursday, following coordinated efforts by its engineers and technical teams from across the power sector .
The restoration comes after a significant fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. on August 20, which triggered the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and several thermal plants .
Cause of the Outage
The company explained that the fault activated the power system’s protection mechanisms, designed to safeguard the stability and integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System. The automatic tripping resulted in the loss of power supply to households, businesses, and essential services across the country .
In the Greater Accra Region, communities including Adabraka, Weija, Tesano, Achimota, Dzorwulu, Legon, Madina, Adenta, and Oyarifa were among the areas affected, with residents reporting outages from the early hours. The disruption was also felt in parts of the Eastern, Northern, Central, and Ashanti regions, including Aburi and Tamale .
Immediately following the incident, GRIDCo engineers moved swiftly to isolate the affected transmission line and commenced a safe and systematic restoration process .
Concerns Over Recurring Outages
This incident marks the second major disruption to the national grid in less than a month, renewing concerns about the reliability and resilience of Ghana’s electricity supply infrastructure .
The recurrence has prompted calls from energy analysts for greater transparency and comprehensive investigations into the root causes of the system failures. Justice Ohene-Akoto, Director of the Africa Sustainable Energy Centre, expressed reservations about GRIDCo’s explanation, suggesting that frequency problems within the national grid may be contributing to the outages .
“We think GRIDCo is not telling us something. We think GRIDCo should be more transparent on exactly why some of these things are happening,” Ohene-Akoto stated during an interview on Channel One Newsroom .
He further urged the company to conduct and publish comprehensive root-cause analyses after every major outage, explaining what went wrong and how it intends to prevent a repeat in the future .
In contrast, the Energy Minister has suggested that frequency-related challenges were a factor in the recent disturbance, a position the energy analyst said he agrees with .
GRIDCo’s Commitment
In response to the growing concerns, GRIDCo has assured the public that it will continue to implement measures aimed at improving the reliability, stability, and resilience of Ghana’s transmission network .
The company also expressed appreciation to the public, stakeholders, and power sector partners for their patience and cooperation throughout the restoration process.
“Issues of prioritisation, lack of capital resources, and financing remain significant challenges for GRIDCo,” noted energy analyst Benjamin Nsiah, who highlighted the need for infrastructure support and financial investment to prevent future disruptions .
As Ghana continues to experience intermittent power challenges, stakeholders are closely monitoring GRIDCo’s next steps and are calling for a detailed roadmap to address the underlying technical problems affecting the national power grid.
