Gomoa Central MP A-Plus calls on EOCO to investigate GFA finances, citing mismanagement and fvaouritism

Kwame Asare Obeng, the independent Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central popularly known as A-Plus, has formally called on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate the Ghana Football Association over its financial dealings, alleging mismanagement, favoritism in national team selections, and questionable visa arrangements.

In a Facebook post on October 25, 2026, the lawmaker questioned how the GFA could continue to underperform despite substantial funding from both the government and international football bodies, drawing an unflattering comparison with Ghanaian musicians who have built successful careers without state support .

The Musician Comparison

A-Plus invoked the recent achievements of Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy and Samini to sharpen his critique. “Look at what Shatta Wale and his Shatta Movement, as well as Sarkodie, have achieved this year without government funding or backing from international organisations,” he wrote. “Stonebwoy and Samini are next in line to make their mark” .

The contrast, he argued, exposes a fundamental failure within the GFA. While musicians operate with limited institutional backing, the football association receives considerable public and international resources yet continues to deliver what he described as “disappointing” results, marked by scandals and repeated failures to meet the expectations of Ghanaian fans .

Direct Appeal to Kurt Okraku

The MP addressed GFA President Kurt Okraku directly, describing him as a friend he holds in high regard while challenging him to confront the disparity. “Kurt, you are my friend, and I hold you in high regard. But tell me, how do you feel watching these individuals achieve remarkable success with limited institutional support while you and your organisation, despite the enormous resources at your disposal, continue to fail woefully?” he asked .

A-Plus’s specific allegations included favoritism in Black Stars player selections, questionable visa arrangements, and broader concerns about financial mismanagement within the association .

The EOCO Demand

The lawmaker urged EOCO to subject the GFA’s financial affairs to “rigorous independent scrutiny” and to pursue any credible evidence of wrongdoing. “The Economic and Organised Crime Office must urgently turn its attention to the GFA,” he stated .

EOCO, established under the Economic and Organised Crime Act 2010 (Act 804), is mandated to investigate serious financial and economic offences involving loss to the Republic or state entities, and has powers to search, seize, freeze assets and recover proceeds of crime .

A-Plus framed the call as a matter of public accountability. “Ghanaian football does not lack talent, passion or resources. What it desperately needs is transparency, responsible leadership and measurable results that justify the enormous public investment,” he wrote .

Background and Context

The call comes amid broader scrutiny of football governance in Ghana. The Dzamefe Commission, established after the 2014 World Cup, documented millions of dollars in unaccounted funds, including US900,000 in prize money that went missing . More recently, sports administrator Nana Fitz has called for the dissolution of the GFA and a probe into a World Cup visa scandal, arguing that taxpayers who fund the Black Stars deserve accountability .

A-Plus, a former musician and activist, won the Gomoa Central seat as an independent in the 2024 elections. He has publicly stated he will never join a political party and has expressed ambitions to run for president . Since entering Parliament, he has positioned himself as a development-focused lawmaker, securing scholarships for over 150 university students from his constituency, funding CHPS compound projects, and expanding free Wi-Fi access across communities .

The GFA has not publicly responded to A-Plus’s call for an EOCO investigation.
