Fire guts GRIDCO substation at Mallam, plunges Lapaz, Awoshie, and other parts of Accra into darkness

ACCRA, Ghana — A fierce fire has engulfed a critical section of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) substation at Mallam, causing a widespread power outage that has left thousands of residents and businesses in parts of the capital, including Lapaz, Mallam, and Awoshie, without electricity.

The incident, which occurred on [Insert Date], has raised serious concerns about the stability of power transmission to these communities.

According to preliminary reports, the blaze destroyed essential equipment, including control boards and at least one transformer. These components are vital for monitoring, protecting, and managing the flow of electricity through the national grid. The loss of a transformer, in particular, is a significant blow, as it is responsible for stepping down high-voltage electricity from transmission lines to a lower voltage suitable for distribution to homes and factories.

Firefighters from the Adjen Kotoku and Amasaman fire stations responded swiftly to the emergency, battling the flames to contain the blaze. Their prompt intervention was crucial in preventing the fire from spreading to other adjacent critical installations within the substation, potentially averting a more catastrophic failure of the facility.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.

The outage has brought daily life and economic activity to a halt for many in the affected areas. Residents in Lapaz and Awoshie are grappling with spoiled food, disrupted work-from-home arrangements, and the inconvenience of living without power. For small businesses, particularly those reliant on refrigeration or electronic equipment, the outage represents a direct financial loss.

GRIDCo, a cornerstone of Ghana’s electricity supply chain, operates the national transmission system, which acts as the backbone for the entire power sector. It transports bulk electricity from generation companies to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and other distributors, who then supply it to end-users. Substations like the one in Mallam are critical nodes in this network.

The extent of the damage to the substation and the timeline for restoring normal operations remain unconfirmed. Technicians are expected to conduct a thorough assessment to determine the full scope of the destruction and the repairs required. Control boards, which are the “brain” of the substation’s operations, are sophisticated pieces of equipment; their damage can significantly complicate restoration efforts and may require specialized parts and expertise to repair.

As of the time of reporting, GRIDCo has yet to issue a formal statement on the incident or provide an estimated timeline for when power will be restored to the affected communities. Residents in Lapaz, Mallam, Awoshie, and surrounding areas now face an anxious wait for the lights to come back on.
