ECG announces 7-day power outages across Tema, Eastern, and Western Regions

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a series of scheduled power outages across parts of Tema, the Eastern Region, and the Western Region, set to begin on Sunday, August 30, 2026, and continue for the next seven days.

The state-owned power distributor disclosed the maintenance schedule via its official social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), stating that the temporary interruptions are necessary for urgent repairs and system upgrades aimed at improving service reliability and preventing further faults .

Outage details

According to ECG, the outages will primarily occur between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm daily in most affected areas, although timelines may vary in some locations. The exercise follows multiple faults that have recently disrupted power supply within the distribution network, prompting what ECG described as emergency maintenance works .

The announcement comes as part of a series of planned and emergency maintenance operations the company has rolled out in recent weeks as part of broader efforts to stabilise electricity supply and address challenges within its distribution infrastructure .

Growing pressure on power network

The maintenance programme unfolds against a backdrop of significant strain on Ghana’s power transmission and distribution systems. According to analysis by the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Ghana’s system peak electricity demand has more than doubled over the past decade—from approximately 1,933 megawatts (MW) in 2015 to roughly 4,280 MW in 2025, representing sustained annual growth of over 8 percent .

The IES has warned that investment in transmission infrastructure has failed to keep pace with this demand growth, leaving the system increasingly characterised by congested transmission corridors, rising technical losses, and overloaded ageing equipment . The think tank has described the situation as placing Ghana’s power grid in a “higher-risk zone” for supply shortfalls if capacity expansion and grid upgrades continue to lag behind demand growth .

Industry impact

The scheduled maintenance is expected to significantly affect businesses that depend heavily on electricity during normal working hours, particularly as the outages will occur throughout most of the daytime period .

ECG has apologised for the inconvenience the outages will cause and urged affected residents and business owners to make alternative arrangements during the stated hours to minimise disruption to daily activities.

Infrastructure investment efforts

The maintenance work forms part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades being undertaken by ECG to strengthen the country’s power distribution network. The company has been implementing a nationwide transformer replacement and upgrade programme, with recent projects including a GH¢34 million transformer replacement at the Batsonaa Primary Substation in Accra, where two 26MVA transformers are being replaced with higher-capacity 39MVA units . ECG has indicated that it plans to upgrade 22 substations within the Greater Accra Region alone as part of this programme .

The IES has stressed that addressing the structural imbalance between demand growth and transmission capacity expansion requires urgent policy action and investment, including upgrading existing transmission infrastructure, reinforcing key corridors, and replacing ageing transformers and substation equipment .

“We hope that after these replacements, we will have a very strong network, reliable power supply and a stable system,” said Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, ECG’s General Manager for External Communications, during a recent briefing on the company’s infrastructure upgrade efforts .

Residents are encouraged to check ECG’s official communication channels for specific schedules in their communities.
