Don’t overlook domestic challenges while addressing South Africa issues, legal practitioner warns government

Legal practitioner Amanda Clinton has called on the government to strike a balance between addressing concerns in South Africa and tackling pressing domestic challenges at home.

Her remarks come amid rising anxiety over reported xenophobic incidents targeting Ghanaian citizens living in South Africa. While Clinton acknowledged the government’s duty to protect Ghanaians abroad, she cautioned against allowing foreign policy concerns to overshadow urgent local issues.

“Effective governance requires a balanced approach,” Clinton said, emphasising that both international and internal matters must be handled with equal seriousness.

Although the government’s response to developments in South Africa is understandable, she argued that socioeconomic difficulties facing Ghanaians daily should not be neglected.

Her comments have fuelled public debate over how governments should allocate attention and resources when managing simultaneous foreign and domestic crises.

Supporters of Clinton’s position argue that local development and governance deserve renewed focus as Ghana continues to grapple with significant economic and social pressures. Others, however, contend that protecting citizens abroad remains a critical responsibility that cannot be downplayed.

The discussion reflects a broader governance challenge for nations navigating the competing demands of foreign policy and domestic priorities.
