Refugees fleeing escalating violence in Mali have shared harrowing accounts of brutality, describing how armed groups have stormed villages, killed residents, and forced thousands of civilians to abandon their homes.
Many of the displaced, now seeking safety in neighboring areas, told reporters that armed men carried out violent raids with little warning, leaving terrified families no choice but to flee.
“We saw terrible things,” one refugee was quoted as saying, recounting killings and widespread panic as armed groups moved through entire communities.
According to survivors, many families escaped suddenly at night, leading to separation and confusion in the darkness. Some have since lost contact with relatives amid the chaos.
The exodus is part of a broader escalation of conflict in Mali, where armed groups remain active across several regions, fueling growing instability and displacement. Thousands of civilians are believed to have been affected, with many now living in temporary shelters or congested border communities.
Humanitarian observers warn that the crisis is deepening. Civilians are frequently caught between armed factions and ongoing security operations, worsening an already dire humanitarian situation.
The testimonies underscore the severe human toll of the conflict, as fear, displacement, and loss continue to spread across affected areas.
As violence shows no sign of abating, attention is turning to the urgent need for protection and humanitarian assistance for those caught in the crossfire.
