Bishop Boxing Promotions takes legal action to protect boxers, legacy of Ghana boxing

Bishop Boxing Promotions has called an emergency press briefing for today, May 5, at 2:30pm at Marsaw Media Headquarters in Tse Addo, Accra, citing a dispute that threatens the upcoming Best of Bukom 3 boxing event scheduled for May 8.

In a public statement released on behalf of the promotion and its counsel, Solomon Kwatei Quartey of Akapalu, Yartey & Associates, President Dave Bishop said a 50/50 partnership agreement for the event was abruptly renounced during a May 3 meeting at LaBoma Beach Resort. The meeting included representatives of RBS Promotions and LaBoma Beach.

According to the statement, the partners withdrew citing dissatisfaction with a reggae concert held the previous day. Bishop Boxing alleges that after the withdrawal, the partners left the entire organizational responsibility to Bishop Boxing while still demanding 30% of gate revenue — a demand the promotion described as “unreasonable and unacceptable.”

The letter also claims that the partners insisted on delegating production to an inexperienced, low-cost crew and refused to allow Bishop Boxing to implement the professional production standards required for live television coverage. Bishop Boxing says it had committed from the start to overseeing full production to meet broadcast standards.

“We sincerely apologize to our fighters, their families, supporters, and the wider Ghanaian boxing fraternity for this disruption,” the statement read. “Our athletes, who prepare for months and rely on these shows for their livelihoods, deserve far better.”

Bishop Boxing said it has given the other parties 24 hours to reverse their withdrawal and honor the original agreement. Should they fail to do so, the promotion intends to pursue “all available legal remedies” to protect its interests and those of the boxers, and to establish what it called an “appropriate precedent.”

The promotion said further details will be shared at today’s 2:30pm press briefing at Marsaw Media Headquarters on 9th Ave, Treasure Avenue Street, Accra.
