World Cup referees are set to earn a staggering $100,000 (£75,000) for officiating at this summer’s expanded tournament — roughly double what they received for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
FIFA’s substantial pay hike is aimed at securing the world’s elite officials for the 2026 tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The competition has been expanded to feature 48 teams and a record 104 matches, placing unprecedented demands on match officials .
The financial rewards don’t stop there. Referees who impress during the group stages and are retained for the knockout rounds stand to earn significant bonuses on top of their base salary. The ultimate payday awaits the official selected to take charge of the World Cup final on July 19, with that individual expected to pocket around £100,000 in total compensation .
Record-breaking officiating contingent
FIFA has appointed a record 170 match officials for the 2026 tournament, comprising 52 referees, 88 assistant referees and 30 video assistant referee (VAR) specialists . This represents an increase of 41 officials compared to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, reflecting the tournament’s expanded scale .
The officials have been drawn from 50 FIFA member nations across all six confederations — UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, CAF, AFC and OFC .
How the payment structure works
While FIFA has not officially confirmed the complete pay scale, former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has shed light on the compensation model. Officials are generally paid on a per-match basis, with fees escalating as the tournament progresses .
Group stage: Referees receive approximately $3,000 per match
Knockout stages: Match fees can double to around $10,000 per match
In addition to match fees, referees receive daily allowances to cover expenses throughout the tournament, further boosting their total earnings .
The final payday
The referee awarded the World Cup final can expect to earn between $60,000 and $70,000 in bonuses alone, according to Clattenburg’s estimates . When combined with the base participation fee and daily allowances, a top-performing official who progresses deep into the tournament could potentially earn close to $300,000 .
For comparison, referees at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar received a participation fee of approximately $70,000, with additional match payments . The 2014 tournament in Brazil saw referees earn $50,000 for their involvement .
Elite officials in line for bonuses
England’s leading officials, Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor, have both been selected by FIFA and are therefore in line for the handsome payday — provided England do not reach the final themselves, as referees cannot officiate matches involving their home nation .
FIFA Referees Committee Chairman Pierluigi Collina emphasised the rigorous selection process behind the appointments. “The selected match officials are the very best in the world,” Collina said. “They were part of a wider pool of officials that was identified and monitored over the past three years” .
The 2026 World Cup kicks off this summer across 16 host cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with the final scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
