High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has clinched the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary nomination for the Ayawaso East Constituency, setting the stage for a crucial by-election on March 3.
Baba Jamal secured victory with 431 votes in a primary held on Friday, February 7, overcoming contenders including Hajia Amina Adam who polled 399 votes.
The election was conducted under a cloud of controversy, with the NDC’s national leadership issuing a strong statement earlier in the day condemning widespread incidents of alleged bribery and inducement at polling centres. The party has launched an immediate investigation into the reports.
In a statement signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC warned of swift disciplinary action against any candidate found culpable, indicating that such misconduct could lead to drastic sanctions, including the potential cancellation of election results.
Despite the allegations, voting proceeded under tight supervision from party officials and security personnel, with delegates turning out to cast their ballots across the constituency.
