World Malaria Day 2026: Ghana achieves 98% drop in malaria deaths

Ghana has recorded a stunning 98 percent reduction in malaria-related deaths, marking a historic turning point in the nation’s long-running battle against the disease.

The announcement came during World Malaria Day 2026 commemorations, where Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, speaking on behalf of the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, hailed the achievement as proof of what coordinated national effort, innovation, and strong partnerships can accomplish.

“This achievement shows that malaria can be defeated with the right strategies and collective action,” Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe said. “However, we must sustain the momentum and ensure that every suspected case is tested and treated promptly.”

Health officials attribute the sharp decline to sustained interventions over several years: widespread distribution and use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, improved access to effective antimalarial drugs, indoor residual spraying, and intensified public education campaigns. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment at health facilities have also played a critical role, according to the Ghana Health Service.

While praising the progress, Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe urged government agencies, development partners, the private sector, and communities to renew their commitment. The goal, he said, is to push toward complete elimination of the disease.

The National Malaria Elimination Programme organised the day’s events, which brought together health professionals, policymakers, students, and the public. Activities included a health walk from the University of Ghana in Legon through the principal streets of Madina, ending with a durbar at the university’s Sports Directorate. Participants received education on maintaining clean environments to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, consistent use of bed nets, and seeking early medical care when symptoms arise.

World Malaria Day is observed annually to highlight global efforts to control and eliminate malaria. With this latest milestone, Ghana ranks among countries making the most significant strides against the disease, raising optimism that elimination is within reach if current strategies are sustained and strengthened.

Health authorities have called on all stakeholders to remain vigilant and contribute actively to the final push toward a malaria-free Ghana.
