Prez Mahama breaks ground of new concourse to decongest Kotoka International Airport

President John Dramani Mahama officially cut the sod on Sunday for the construction of an interconnecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3 at Kotoka International Airport, launching a major infrastructure project aimed at easing congestion and improving passenger flow at Ghana’s busiest aviation gateway.

The ceremony, held at the airport premises, drew government officials, aviation regulators, and industry stakeholders. The project is part of a broader modernisation effort designed to keep pace with rising passenger demand and strengthen Ghana’s position as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.

In remarks at the event, President Mahama described the initiative as more than a symbolic gesture, calling it a strategic national investment in efficiency, traveller experience, and long-term economic development. He noted that Ghana’s aviation sector has seen steady growth, with passenger traffic rising from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025 — evidence of the country’s growing connectivity and appeal as a regional travel destination.

However, the president cautioned that growth has brought operational challenges, particularly peak-hour congestion that strains airport services and undermines passenger convenience. He said urgent interventions, such as the interconnecting concourse, are needed to ensure infrastructure development keeps pace with demand.

Once completed, the new concourse will enable seamless movement between Terminals 2 and 3, improving coordination and reducing delays. The facility will feature modern passenger boarding bridges, expanded waiting areas, VIP lounges, retail outlets, and upgraded service infrastructure to enhance both efficiency and traveller comfort.

Aviation stakeholders welcomed the project as a timely intervention that will ease congestion and lift service delivery at the airport. Authorities said construction would proceed in phases to minimise disruption to ongoing operations while ensuring steady progress toward completion.

The project also supports Ghana’s ambition to position Accra as a competitive sub-regional aviation hub capable of handling increased international traffic and attracting more airlines and transit passengers.
