The Veteran Table Tennis Association of Ghana (VTTAG), under the auspices of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, will hold the maiden edition of Ghana Smash, an all-inclusive table tennis tournament, at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra from 26 to 27 September 2026.
Described by organisers as both a “bonanza and an orchestra of table tennis,” the two-day event is designed to cut across the sport’s entire spectrum — from grassroots players to elite international professionals — while drawing in the corporate world locally and internationally.
A Tournament for All
Ghana Smash will feature Men’s and Women’s Singles, Open Championships Doubles, Mixed Doubles, and a Corporate Open Championship. The corporate category is specifically intended to attract participation from businesses and institutions, creating a platform for networking and synergy between professionals and the corporate sector.
Organisers say the event is not just a competition but a movement to “shake the status quo and decades of sclerosis” in Ghana’s table tennis space, which has long been overshadowed by better-known sports such as football and boxing.
“The superior and holistic benefits of table tennis as a conduit to overall health and socio-economic development and stability cannot be overemphasized,” VTTAG said in a statement. “Ghana Smash seeks to highlight all these benefits and to advocate for the propagation of table tennis as the sport of choice in Ghana and beyond.”
A Global Call to Participate
The intended audience for Ghana Smash, organisers say, is “global” in one word. The tournament extends an open invitation to all lovers of table tennis — from those who have never picked up a paddle to seasoned professionals who have built careers from the sport.
“We are calling on all and sundry — all lovers of table tennis as well as those who are virgins in the table tennis space and those who are professionals,” the organisers said. “Let us all get together with one voice to sing the FOREVER YOUNG song of table tennis. Out of a little flame, a mighty blaze can erupt.”
Changing Mindsets, Creating Opportunities
By showcasing table tennis as a sport that can be played and enjoyed at all ages, by all sexes, and at all levels, Ghana Smash seeks to transform the mindset of Ghanaians and demonstrate that sports need not be expensive or arduous.
Organisers point to the many individuals who have carved career paths from and with table tennis — from scholarships to job and business opportunities — as evidence of the sport’s potential. The tournament aims to reveal “the splendor of the industrial humus in which human effort can be applied for profit and personal development.”
Health Benefits in Focus
A central theme of Ghana Smash is the health-enhancing benefits of table tennis. The sport is described as helping to create social wellbeing, emotional satisfaction, brain and body stimulation, and avoidance of infirmity and disease.
Renowned medical doctors who are themselves active veteran table tennis players — including Dr. Daniel Ackon and Dr. Dela — have endorsed table tennis as the best health-enhancing sport, according to the organisers.
A Foundation for the Future
Organisers describe Ghana Smash as foundational — a maiden tournament of its kind in the sub-region that represents not only an opportunity for legacy but also the foundation upon which all facets of table tennis development can be built.
“Professionals and corporate bodies will have a platform for synergistic networking. Individuals can tap into the plethora and wealth of experience offered by the VTTAG,” the organisers said. “By the fecundity and dedication of this maiden event, many healthy offsprings are reasonably expected to be delivered by the VTTAG.”
About the Venue
The Borteyman Sports Complex, located in Accra, is one of Ghana’s premier multi-purpose sporting facilities. It was a key venue during the 2023 African Games, hosting table tennis and other indoor events, and has since become a hub for national and international competitions.
