In a remarkable display of surgical skill, doctors at the 37 Military Hospital have successfully removed a motorbike key that had become lodged in the skull of a 29-year-old farmer who was attacked while trying to separate two fighting youths.
The victim, Moro Razak, a farmer from Awoma in the Jasikan Municipality of the Oti Region, sustained the life-threatening injury on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at about 9:00 pm at Amenyo, another farming community in the municipality.
According to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the incident began when two young men from Bodada, who had travelled to Amenyo to play tsatsa (a local gambling game), became embroiled in a physical confrontation. Mr Razak, who was at the scene, intervened in an attempt to restore calm. During the melee, he was allegedly stabbed in the head with a motorbike key, which became embedded in his skull.
Emergency Response and Referral
Mr Razak was initially rushed to the Jasikan Municipal Hospital for emergency treatment. However, due to the severity of his condition, medical officers referred him to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for more specialised neurosurgical care.
Successful Surgery
Providing an update on Monday, July 27, Moro Alhassan, an uncle of the victim who has been staying with him at the hospital, told the GNA that surgeons successfully performed the operation on Sunday, July 26.
“The operation was successful, and Razak is recovering well by the grace of Allah,” Mr Alhassan said.
He expressed profound gratitude to the medical team at the 37 Military Hospital for their professionalism and dedication in saving his nephew’s life. Mr Alhassan also thanked relatives, friends, and members of the public who offered prayers and other forms of support following the incident, and appealed for continued prayers for Mr Razak’s full recovery as he remains under medical observation.
Financial Hardship
The family faced significant financial challenges in securing the surgery. According to reports, upon arrival at the 37 Military Hospital, the family was informed they would need GH¢33,000 to cover the cost of medicines and surgery. Unable to raise the full amount, the family managed to mobilise GH¢7,000, which enabled doctors to prepare the victim for surgery. Mr Razak was taken to the theatre on Saturday, July 25, for the operation.
Community Shock and Call for Peace
The incident has sent shockwaves through the communities of Awoma, Amenyo, and surrounding areas, with many describing it as a tragic consequence of a dispute that escalated into senseless violence.
Abraham Iman, the Assembly Member for the Kayadan Electoral Area (where Awoma is located), confirmed the incident and appealed to the public to support the family financially. He also urged residents, particularly the youth, to resolve disagreements peacefully and avoid resorting to violence.
Police Investigation
The Jasikan Municipal Police have commenced investigations into the incident. However, no arrest had been made as of the time of filing this report.
