South Korea strengthens taekwondo ties with Ghana through uniforms and training equipment donation to GTF

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Accra has reinforced its long-standing commitment to the development of Taekwondo in Ghana, with Ambassador H.E. Park Kyongsig presenting taekwondo uniforms and training equipment to the Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF).

The donation, supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea, forms part of broader efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation through cultural and sporting exchanges, particularly at the grassroots level.

The items presented included taekwondo uniforms and essential training equipment, adding to the Korean Embassy’s consistent support for the sport in Ghana. Similar handovers in recent months have provided gear such as head protectors, shin guards, forearm guards, and kicking targets.

A Cultural Bridge and a Tool for Youth Development

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Park described Taekwondo not merely as a competitive sport but as a vital cultural bridge linking Korea and Ghana. He emphasized that the martial art serves as a valuable tool for youth development and mental well-being, fostering discipline and confidence among young Ghanaians.

“I am delighted to see many young Ghanaians embracing taekwondo,” Ambassador Park said, reiterating Korea’s commitment to supporting the sport’s growth through equipment, technical assistance, and cultural exchange.

The partnership comes at a significant moment, as Ghana and Korea prepare to commemorate 50 years of formal diplomatic relations in 2027. Korea’s involvement in Ghanaian Taekwondo dates back to the 1970s, when Korean instructors first helped establish the sport locally.

GTF’s Grassroots Vision

Receiving the equipment, GTF President Frederick Lartey Otu expressed gratitude for Korea’s sustained investment, noting that previous support contributed significantly to Ghana’s successful hosting of the Taekwondo competition during the 2023 African Games.

The GTF leadership has outlined ambitious plans to expand the sport’s reach. Central to this strategy is the newly launched regional awareness campaign, which initially targets five regions: Ashanti, Northern, Upper West, Bono, and Central.

“Talent is everywhere,” Otu stated, echoing the federation’s mantra. “Young people with potential can be found in communities across Ghana, including places where access to structured sporting opportunities may be limited. We want to go into those communities, find that talent, and give young people an opportunity to develop.”

The federation is also working to integrate Taekwondo into school curricula, leveraging partnerships with the Ghana Education Service and private school councils to identify and nurture talent early.

As the GTF continues to “go where the talent is,” the Embassy’s consistent support ensures that young athletes across the country have the basic tools they need to pursue the sport.
