Social commentator Bongo ideas slams former NYA Deputy CEO over KFC promotion unemployment claim

Social commentator and blogger Albert Nat Hyde, popularly known as Bongo Ideas, has sharply criticised a former Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA) for linking long queues at a KFC promotion to unemployment in the country.

🗣️ The Controversy

Mr. Hyde, a well-known figure in Ghanaian social commentary circles , dismissed the argument as “nonsensical,” insisting that the public’s rush to take advantage of a discounted meal is not evidence of a jobs crisis. His comments come after the former NYA deputy CEO, Akosua Manu , allegedly argued that the scenes at KFC outlets during a โ‚ต15 chicken-and-fries promotion were symptomatic of youth unemployment.

โ€œIt is a promotion, and people are simply rushing to take advantage of a good deal. Donโ€™t we all rush for discounts when expensive items are being sold at cheaper prices?โ€ Mr. Hyde said, according to his critique.

⚖️ The Counter-Argument: A Question of Record

Mr. Hyde did not stop at dismissing the claim; he turned the argument back on the former NYA official, questioning her record during her tenure.

โ€œAs someone who served as Deputy CEO of the National Youth Authority under the NPP government, where are the jobs she worked so hard to create?โ€ he asked. โ€œIf a KFC promotion is now being used as evidence of unemployment, then we should also be asking what concrete job-creation results came from her time at the NYA,โ€ he added.

He urged Ghanaians not to politicise every queue or promotion, insisting that consumer behaviour should not be conflated with structural economic challenges. โ€œLetโ€™s be serious. Not every queue is evidence of unemployment, and not every promotion needs to be turned into politics,โ€ Mr. Hyde stated.

📊 Background: The Youth Unemployment Debate

The exchange touches on a sensitive national issue. Data from the Ghana Youth Federation has revealed that nearly 2 million young Ghanaians between the ages of 15 and 35 are currently not in education, employment, or training (NEET) . Youth unemployment stands at 21.9%, significantly higher than the national average of 12.8%, with the Greater Accra Region recording an even higher rate of 31.9% .

Notably, it was Sherif Ghali, President of the Ghana Youth Federation, who referenced the KFC queues at the National Youth Forum, arguing that the incident should spark a conversation about the economic circumstances of young people rather than be dismissed as reckless behaviour . The former NYA deputy CEO’s comments, which sparked Mr. Hyde’s reaction, appear to have been made in response to or in support of this broader discussion.

🏁 Conclusion

Mr. Hyde’s rebuke highlights a growing sensitivity in Ghanaian public discourse, where economic phenomena and consumer behaviour are often interpreted through political lenses. While the debate over youth unemployment remains legitimate, his point underscores a divide in how the public interprets visible social events versus long-term structural policy challenges.
