Raphinha sets new challenge: “I want same level for Brazil that I have at Barca’

Barcelona and Brazil winger Raphinha has issued a frank and ambitious statement on his international form, admitting that he has performed “much more” for his club than for his country – and vowing to close the gap.

In an interview that has quickly gone viral among football fans, the 29-year-old attacker rejected any suggestion of hypocrisy, saying: “I have performed much MORE at Barça than with Brazil. I am not a hypocrite.”

“Now my challenge is to reach the SAME LEVEL with Brazil that I have reached in Barcelona,” he added, his eyes set firmly on the 2026 World Cup cycle.

‘I Take It As a Compliment’

Raphinha, who has been one of the most electrifying players in La Liga this season, acknowledged that fans and pundits have begun to demand he replicate his club heroics in the famous yellow shirt.

“If people now demand that I play for Brazil like I do at Barça, I take it as a compliment, because it means I have the ability to do it,” he said.

The former Leeds United star has often faced criticism for a perceived dip in efficiency when wearing the Seleção jersey. While his work rate and dribbling have never been questioned, his goal contributions for Brazil have lagged behind his stunning numbers at Camp Nou.

Numbers Behind the Statement

At Barcelona this season (2025–26), Raphinha has registered 18 goals and 13 assists in all competitions, including decisive performances in the Champions League knockout rounds. He has formed a devastating partnership with Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski under manager Hansi Flick.

For Brazil, however, his output has been more modest: since his debut in 2021, he has scored 8 goals in 27 appearances – a respectable return, but far from the match-winning influence he exerts weekly for the Blaugrana.

“I’m not here to make excuses,” Raphinha said. “The system is different, the teammates are different, the rhythm of international football is different. But I know I can do more. I want to be decisive for Brazil the same way I am for Barça.”

Brazil’s New Era Under Dorival Júnior

Raphinha’s comments come as Brazil prepare for a fresh start under head coach Dorival Júnior, who took over after a disappointing 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign that saw the Seleção finish third behind Argentina and Uruguay.

Dorival has publicly backed Raphinha as a key part of his attacking trident, alongside Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo. The coach recently told Globo Esporte: “Raphinha has matured enormously. His intensity at Barça is world-class. Now we must create the conditions for him to feel that same freedom with us.”

Brazil’s next fixtures are a pair of friendlies against England and Spain in March, where Raphinha is expected to start. Fans will be watching closely to see if the winger can finally translate his club dominance onto the international stage.

A History of Honesty

This is not the first time Raphinha has spoken candidly about his own performances. After Brazil’s quarterfinal exit at the 2022 World Cup – where he started every match but failed to score – he admitted he “could have given more.”

His latest remarks, however, carry a sharper tone of accountability and ambition. By refusing to hide behind clichés, he has turned outside criticism into internal fuel.

“Some players would be offended if people said they play better for their club,” said Brazilian football analyst Marina Bento. “Raphinha is saying: ‘You’re right – and I’m going to fix it.’ That’s rare and refreshing.”

What’s Next?

With the 2026 World Cup in North America less than 18 months away, Raphinha’s timing could not be more critical. Brazil are desperate to end a 24-year drought since their last world title in 2002, and they need every superstar firing on all cylinders.

For now, Raphinha has put his own standard in writing: match Barça’s level, or consider the job unfinished.

“I’m not a hypocrite,” he repeated. “I know what I’ve done at Barça. Now I want the same for Brazil. That’s my challenge.”
