Police shut down assemblies of God Church in Ghana over pastoral succession clash

Police have temporarily closed an Assemblies of God church in the Bantama Constituency following a violent dispute among members over the appointment of a new pastor.

The conflict erupted after the retirement of the church’s former leader, Rev. Yaw Manu, which reportedly split the congregation into opposing factions. Each side backed different views on who should succeed him, and tensions escalated during church activities until a physical confrontation broke out.

Fearing the situation could spiral further, authorities were called to the premises at Bohyen Adumanu to restore order. Police later ordered the church’s temporary closure to prevent additional disturbances while efforts are made to resolve the internal conflict peacefully.

Residents expressed surprise at the incident, noting that places of worship are expected to foster unity and understanding.

Observers say dialogue involving church elders, regional leadership, and members will be essential to restore peace and confidence within the congregation. Many worshippers hope for a swift resolution so normal services can resume.

The shutdown will remain in effect while security authorities monitor the situation and church leadership works toward a peaceful solution.
