Two suspects have been taken into custody following a violent armed robbery that claimed the life of a Berekum Chelsea FC player earlier this week.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrests in a statement issued Wednesday night, identifying one of the detained individuals as the alleged leader of the gang.
According to police intelligence, officers tracked down the suspects, leading to an exchange of gunfire. One of the armed men sustained injuries during the shootout and has since been transported to a medical facility for treatment under police guard.
“The Police have arrested the gang leader and one other suspect in connection with the robbery incident that led to the death of the Berekum Chelsea footballer,” the statement read. “Further details will be communicated.”
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday night as the team was returning from a Ghana Premier League match against Samartex 1996 at Samreboi. Reports indicate that six armed men blocked the path of the team’s VIP bus, which was carrying approximately 30 players and officials.
The attackers opened fire, forcing the driver off the road into nearby bushes. In the ensuing chaos, players and staff fled for their lives. It was during this attack that a player lost his life.
The Ghana Football Association and the club have yet to release an official statement, but condolences have continued to pour in from across the football community.
Police have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects involved in the deadly highway attack.
