The Ghana Gas Processing Plant has been hit by a major technical fault, forcing an emergency shutdown and causing power supply disruptions in several parts of the country.
In a joint statement issued on April 15, 2026, the Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) disclosed that the incident resulted from a complete failure of the Burner Management System controller for the Heat Medium System.
Preliminary assessments indicate the affected component is beyond repair and will require a full replacement.
The unforeseen development has led to a temporary curtailment of gas supply to thermal power plants, which in turn has triggered power outages in some affected areas.
A comprehensive technical and safety risk assessment is currently underway to determine the most effective and secure pathway for restoring operations. A dedicated team of engineers is working around the clock to replace the damaged system and expedite the restoration process.
Subject to the outcome of ongoing assessments, Ghana Gas is expected to commence processes to restore operations within the course of today, April 16, 2026.
The two state agencies appealed to the public for patience and understanding.
โWe will continue to provide timely updates as the situation evolves. The public is kindly urged to bear with us during this period of disruption,โ the statement read. โWe sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding and cooperation.โ
The release was signed by the Corporate Affairs Directorates of both GNGC and GRIDCo.
