Methodist Church responds to viral video of member confronting Bishop over tithes

The Methodist Church of Ghana has broken its silence on a viral video showing a female church member angrily labelling a bishop a “thief” during a heated exchange over tithing, urging forgiveness and compassion.

In a statement shared on the church’s official X platform on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the Presiding Bishop, Most Reverend Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, described the incident as “an old story” rather than a recent development, adding that the church had already engaged the situation through appropriate channels.

The video, which circulated widely on social media, captured the member in a tense confrontation with a minister over tithe payments. The Presiding Bishop commended the minister for showing restraint, stating, “We thank God for the maturity demonstrated by the minister in not continuing the exchanges.”

He also acknowledged that the member had since expressed remorse, adding, “We are grateful to the member for her apology.”

The Church expressed concern over the emotional toll the public backlash has taken on the individual at the centre of the controversy. “She is hurting by the public attacks. Mama, our love for you is unconditional,” the statement read, reinforcing the Church’s commitment to care and reconciliation.

Citing scripture, the Presiding Bishop quoted Jesus in John 9:39: “I came into this world for judgement, so that those who do not see may see and those who do see may become blind.”

The statement concluded with a reminder of the Christian foundation of forgiveness: “It is the gracious forgiveness of Jesus that keeps us all. Blessings.”

The response underscores the Methodist Church’s broader commitment to unity, grace and conflict resolution, even amid intense public scrutiny.
