Legend Lamptey delivers brutally honest verdict on Black Stars’ chances against England

Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey has offered a stark and realistic assessment of the Black Stars’ prospects ahead of their high-profile international friendly against England, admitting that the Three Lions are superior in virtually every department.

In a candid interview with Accra-based Asempa FM, the former attacking midfielder did not mince his words, stating that he would be genuinely “surprised” if Ghana managed to overcome the European heavyweights.

“I will be surprised if the Black Stars win against England. They are better than us in terms of everything,” Lamptey confessed. While the ex-star—who graced the 1994 and 1998 World Cups—remains a patriot at heart, he insisted that sentiment must not cloud reality. “I’m a Ghanaian, and if we win, I will celebrate, but on the face of it, I’ll not be surprised if we lose to England,” he added.

Lamptey’s remarks come ahead of a crucial test for Otto Addo’s rebuilding squad as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. England, boasting a roster of Premier League and Champions League winners, are widely expected to dominate possession and dictate the tempo against a Ghanaian side that has struggled for consistency since their group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The former Anderlecht and Aston Villa trialist’s comments have stirred debate among the Ghanaian football fraternity, with many fans acknowledging the gulf in quality while others hope for a spirited underdog performance reminiscent of the team’s 2006 World Cup debut when they famously beat the Czech Republic.

Despite the doom-laden forecast, Lamptey stopped short of writing off the Black Stars entirely, emphasizing that football’s unpredictability means an upset is never impossible—even if it remains highly unlikely.

Ghana will face England at Wembley Stadium in what promises to be a litmus test for the West African nation’s current generation. The match also serves as a dress rehearsal for the Three Lions ahead of their Euro 2024 campaign, while Ghana aims to sharpen their teeth ahead of a congested qualifying schedule.

For now, however, the message from one of Ghana’s most celebrated football sons is clear: manage expectations, play without fear—but do not be deceived by the glamour of the fixture. The reality, as Lamptey sees it, is that England are simply operating on a different level.
