’A declaration of love’: Casemiro’s wife Anna opens up on emotional farewell as United exit looms

Anna Mariana Casemiro has described the Manchester United faithful’s now-iconic “One more year” chant as a “declaration of love” for her husband, as the Brazilian midfielder prepares to bring down the curtain on his four-year spell at Old Trafford.

The emotional tribute from supporters has become a regular feature at United home games in recent months, with the Stretford End serenading the 34-year-old with chants of “One more year, one more year, Casemiro” in a heartfelt attempt to persuade him to extend his stay. The pleas grew louder after he powered home a header against Aston Villa in March, and again when he opened the scoring against Brentford in April, with fans continuing the chant long after the final whistle.

Speaking in a farewell documentary released by the club, Anna reflected on the emotional weight of the supporters’ gesture as the family prepared to say goodbye. “His chant feels like a declaration of love for him,” she said. “For us, there’s an emptiness in leaving. The love we are receiving through that song means so much”.

The documentary captured the couple in tears as Casemiro broke down while thanking supporters for four “unbelievable” years. “I need to say thank you because it was four unbelievable years,” he said, visibly emotional. “I love this club, the fans, the people. Thank you so much”.

Casemiro, who joined United from Real Madrid in 2022, made 146 appearances and scored 21 goals during his time in England, helping the club win the FA Cup and EFL Cup. His final appearance came in a 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford in May.

The decision to depart was not taken lightly. “As a family, we talked a lot and had to make this difficult decision,” Anna said. “But I think it feels like the end of a very beautiful chapter, as I told Casemiro and our family. I think everything about this moment has been beautiful, right?”.

Casemiro has confirmed there is “no chance” of a U-turn on his exit, despite team-mate Matheus Cunha offering fans a glimmer of hope by suggesting “you never know”. Interim head coach Michael Carrick has also made clear the decision is final, stating “from both sides it’s pretty clear”.

The Brazilian is expected to complete a move to MLS side Inter Miami following the World Cup, where he will link up with Lionel Messi. He has agreed a two-year contract with an option for a third year at David Beckham’s franchise, though final negotiations over discovery rights with LA Galaxy are ongoing.

For now, the chants of “One more year” serve as a lasting testament to the bond Casemiro forged with the United faithful. “I will be an eternal United fan,” he said. “I just have to thank all the love from the fans”.
