Ivory Coast manager Emorse Fae accuses Bastian Schweinsteiger of racism over wild World Cup remarks

Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Fae has launched a blistering critique of Germany legend Bastian Schweinsteiger, accusing the former midfielder of making “racist” comments after he described the West African nation’s playing style as “African” and “wild” ahead of their World Cup clash.

The controversy erupted following Schweinsteiger’s pre-match analysis for a German broadcast network last week, where the 41-year-old World Cup winner claimed Fae’s team was “not conditioned by tactics” and that their football was “a bit African.” Schweinsteiger, who enjoyed a decorated career with Bayern Munich and Manchester United, further stated that Germany needed to brace for an “unpredictable” encounter due to Ivory Coast’s “unorthodox and wild” style of play.

Germany went on to secure a narrow 2-1 victory over the Ivorians. However, that result was quickly overshadowed when Julian Nagelsmann’s side suffered a stunning 2-1 defeat to Ecuador on Thursday night, throwing their own knockout qualification into serious jeopardy.

In stark contrast, Ivory Coast savored a historic moment on Thursday, sealing their place in the World Cup knockout stages for the first time in their history after a commanding 2-0 victory over Curacao. Former Arsenal forward Nicolas Pépé was the hero of the night, netting a brilliant brace that secured second place in Group E and sent the Ivorian camp into jubilation.

But when asked about Schweinsteiger’s pre-match remarks following the historic win, Fae did not mince words. The manager expressed deep disappointment in a player he once admired.

“I think it’s sad. Schweinsteiger was a very good player. I have always loved him as a midfielder and the way he understood football,” Fae said. “When I heard his comments, I was disappointed in the man. It is odd he would speak that way. We could call it racist, if we were calling a spade a spade.”

Fae pushed back vehemently against the stereotype that African teams rely solely on physical attributes, insisting that the continent’s football has evolved significantly.

“I don’t agree with him, but I have no other solution other than to work with things as they are. All I can show is that on the pitch African teams are not just physical, we are technical and tactical. We work on structures, transitions, and game management just like any top European side,” the manager emphasized.

He concluded with a hint of diplomatic grace, but firmly stood by his stance. “I can only hope it is a clumsy statement, rather than something going on in his mind. If that’s what he thinks, he is free to do so.”

The row has now overshadowed Germany’s precarious World Cup campaign. While Schweinsteiger’s analysis was intended to warn the German side about a tricky opponent, it has instead backfired spectacularly. With Germany currently facing the prospect of a humiliating group-stage exit, and Ivory Coast celebrating their deepest ever run in the tournament, Fae’s on-field success has delivered a powerful retort to the pundit’s controversial assessment.
