The government has started land preparation for the construction of a new 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, in a major push to expand Ghana’s health infrastructure.
The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced the development, saying the project forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s investment in world-class health facilities. The new block will replace the hospital’s existing maternity unit.
“President Mahama is back with investments in major, world-class health infrastructure,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu wrote in a Facebook post.
According to him, the facility will provide specialised maternal and child healthcare, including dedicated Obstetrics and Gynaecology wards, labour and delivery suites, operating theatres, and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
It will also house a High Dependency Unit, an Intensive Care Unit, an IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, antenatal and postnatal clinics, fertility and reproductive health services, and an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit.
Other planned facilities include diagnostic imaging, laboratory and blood bank services, a pharmacy, a Central Sterile Services Department, as well as physiotherapy, rehabilitation, breastfeeding and family planning units.
The Minister added that the block will provide teaching, research and conference facilities to support clinical services and medical training at Korle Bu.
The project is expected to expand access to specialised maternal and newborn care at Ghana’s premier teaching hospital once completed.
