The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced government approval for the payment of outstanding salary arrears owed to newly recruited teachers who were engaged under the 2024 financial clearance.
In a statement issued on April 20, 2026, the GES said the directive, granted by the Ministry of Finance in collaboration with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD), covers eligible teachers whose salary arrears accumulated between August 1, 2024, and November 2025.
The arrears, according to the Service, will be paid in instalments rather than as a single lump sum. Disbursements are scheduled to begin in May 2026 and run through August 2026, with four months’ worth of arrears paid each month.
Daniel Fenyi, Head of the GES Public Relations Unit, signed the statement, which explained that the staggered approach is intended “to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and transparency in the disbursement process and to facilitate proper validation and processing of payments through the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department.”
The move forms part of broader efforts to regularise salary payments and address delays affecting teachers who had already reported to post and commenced work during the period under review.
Regional directors have been directed to communicate the arrangement to heads of schools to ensure that all eligible staff are duly informed.
“Management assures all staff of its continued commitment to their welfare and appreciates their patience and cooperation throughout the process,” the statement added.
