Elaine Thompson-Herah returns in style: Anchors Jamaica to 4X100m gold, claims $40,000 prize

After two agonising years away from competitive racing, Elaine Thompson-Herah is back on top of the world.

The fastest woman alive made a triumphant return to the track today, anchoring Jamaica’s 4x100m relay team to a gold medal victory and pocketing a $40,000 cash prize.

Thompson-Herah, 34, last competed in 2023 before an Achilles tendon tear in 2024 derailed her dreams of defending her double Olympic gold at the Paris Games. The injury forced her to watch from the sidelines as history passed her by.

The 2025 season offered no respite. Still nursing the same Achilles issue, the two-time Olympic 100m and 200m champion remained sidelined for a second consecutive year. Doubts began to creep in – would the sprint legend ever race again?

Those questions were answered emphatically earlier this year. At the Velocity Festival in 2026, Thompson-Herah signalled her return with a stunning 10.92-second clocking in her first competitive race in 24 months.

Today, she proved that performance was no fluke. Running the anchor leg for Jamaica, the veteran sprinter swallowed up the competition and brought the baton home for gold, adding a $40,000 winner’s cheque to her comeback story.

While she remains without an Olympic medal from Paris 2024, her return to the podium – and the payday – suggests the “pocket rocket” still has plenty of fuel left in the tank.
