CENTCOM seeks Pentagon green light for first combat hypersonic deployment, targeting Iran as potential flashpoint

U.S. Central Command has formally requested Pentagon approval to deploy its first operational hypersonic weapon system, a move widely seen as a direct deterrent message to Tehran, defense officials confirmed today.

The weapon in question—codenamed “Dark Eagle”—represents a generational leap in strike capability. Officially designated as the Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW), the system travels in excess of Mach 5 and can execute unpredictable mid-flight maneuvers specifically designed to defeat existing air and missile defense systems.

Strategic analysts note the weapon’s timing: a target 1,725 miles away can be struck in under 15 minutes.

“Nothing accelerates diplomatic timelines like a missile that reliably arrives before a pizza delivery,” one senior defense official remarked off the record, underscoring the shift in conventional deterrence calculus.

If approved, the deployment would mark the first time U.S. forces have fielded an operational hypersonic missile in a theater command. Centcom officials declined to comment on specific launch platforms or timelines, citing operational security.

The request comes amid heightened U.S.-Iran tensions, including ongoing proxy clashes and advances in Tehran’s own ballistic missile and uranium enrichment programs.

Pentagon spokespersons said the request is under review.
