Bono NRSA lauds asphaltic works on Sunyani inner ring road, cautions tricycle riders

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) in the Bono Region has commended the quality of asphaltic work on the Sunyani Inner Ring Road Project, a key component of the government’s flagship “Big Push” Road Infrastructure programme, while simultaneously raising concerns over reckless riding by tricycle operators on the newly paved stretch.

The project, being executed by Kofi Job Constructions Limited, covers a 9.2-kilometre dual carriageway stretching from the Fiapre Roundabout and connecting to the Sunyani Technical University (STU). According to site engineer Mr. Kofi Kamkam, 2.5 kilometres of the road has already been asphalted and opened for use, with the contractor assuring completion within the stipulated two-year timeline.

Economic Uptake Along the Corridor

Mr. Gabriel Kwame Okyere, Public Relations Officer at the Bono Regional Office of the NRSA, praised the government’s initiative, noting that the inner ring road project has effectively opened up the Sunyani Municipality for economic growth. He observed that small-scale businesses have begun springing up along the road corridor since asphalting commenced, creating livelihood opportunities for local residents.

However, Mr. Okyere sounded a cautionary note regarding road safety. “Our major concern now is how tricycle riders are speeding on the road since it was asphalted,” he stated, revealing that the office continues to receive complaints of recklessness by tricycle operators using portions of the newly surfaced road.

Part of Broader National Infrastructure Drive

The Sunyani Inner Ring Road is one of several road projects underway in the Bono Region under the “Big Push” programme, which was launched by President John Dramani Mahama in September 2025. The initiative, valued at approximately US$10 billion over five years, is designed to mobilise resources and introduce innovative financing mechanisms for sustainable infrastructure delivery across Ghana.

Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza has emphasised that the programme is not merely a construction drive but an economic transformation agenda. “The Big Push is not simply a road construction programme. It is an economic transformation programme,” he stated at the 2026 Transport Sector Review Conference, adding that its success must be measured in reduced travel times, connected communities, and expanded business opportunities.

The government has committed over GHยข40 billion to the programme so far, with approximately 2,500 kilometres of roads currently under construction nationwide. The Sunyani Inner Ring Road project itself has been a focal point of local oversight, with the Municipal Chief Executive previously commending contractors for quality work on related road projects in the municipality.

As asphalting progresses on the dual carriageway, residents of Baakoniaba and Berlin Top have reportedly applauded the contractor for the quality of work delivered, expressing optimism that the project will be completed on schedule. The contractor is currently working on one side of the road to minimise traffic disruption, with assurances that dust management measures will continue to be implemented.
