Apple CEO Tim Cook to step down, John Ternus named as successor

Apple has announced that chief executive Tim Cook will step down from the role later this year, with hardware engineering chief John Ternus set to take the helm.

Cook will remain as CEO through the summer before transitioning to executive chairman on September 1, 2026. In his new capacity, he will continue to assist with certain aspects of the company, including engaging with policymakers globally.

The transition, approved by Apple’s Board of Directors, follows a “thoughtful, long-term succession planning process,” the company said in a statement.

Current board chairman Arthur Levinson will become lead independent director following the change.

Cook Reflects on ‘Greatest Privilege’

In a statement, Cook described his tenure as Apple’s CEO as the “greatest privilege” of his life.

“It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company,” Cook said. “I love Apple with all of my being.”

He praised Ternus as a visionary “with the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor.”

Ternus Brings 25 Years of Experience

Ternus, who has spent nearly his entire career at Apple, said he was “profoundly grateful” for the opportunity.

Having worked under both Steve Jobs and Tim Cook, Ternus described his time at Apple as a privilege that allowed him to “help shape the products and experiences that have changed so much of how we interact with the world.”

“I am humbled to step into this role, and I promise to lead with the values and vision that have come to define this special place for half a century,” he added.

Ternus will join Apple’s Board of Directors as part of the transition.
