Prez Mahama holds royal audience with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace

President John Dramani Mahama was received in audience by King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday afternoon, marking the pinnacle of his official working visit to the United Kingdom .

The meeting, which took place at the British monarch’s official London residence, served as the ceremonial highlight of a visit primarily focused on economic diplomacy. The Royal Family released official photographs of the engagement, which showed President Mahama dressed in a traditional Ghanaian smock, known locally as Fugu, exchanging greetings with the King, who wore a formal suit .

While the specific details of their discussions remain undisclosed, such audiences typically centre on bilateral relations, Commonwealth matters, and shared strategic interests . The engagement underscores the deep historical ties between the two nations, with Ghana having been a member of the Commonwealth since its independence in 1957.

A Visit Focused on Economic Revival

The Buckingham Palace audience drew the curtain on a densely packed schedule for the Ghanaian leader, who arrived in London over the weekend. Prior to meeting the King, President Mahama held a breakfast meeting with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street . That closed-door session focused on deepening economic cooperation, expanding trade and investment, and securing climate financing commitments .

Central to the President’s itinerary was the Ghana-UK Investment Summit, designed to reposition Ghana as a premier destination for foreign direct investment. Demonstrating Ghana’s ambitions in global financial markets, President Mahama was a guest at the London Stock Exchange, where he rang the bell to mark the official start of trading .

He further articulated his vision for the West African nation during an address at Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, and a keynote speech at the 12th Africa Debate held at the Guildhall .

Strengthening a “Modern” Partnership

The visit comes as Ghana seeks to expand international partnerships and boost investor confidence following recent economic reforms. President Mahama was accompanied by key members of his economic team, including Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare .

Earlier this year, King Charles III hailed the “enduring partnership” between the UK and Ghana, a relationship increasingly defined by mutual economic interests and joint commitments to climate resilience. The monarch acknowledged the contributions of the Ghanaian diaspora in the UK, describing them as a vital link between the two countries .

The President is expected to return to Ghana today, concluding a visit that officials say has laid the groundwork for strengthened ties between Accra and London .
