Locker room fury: Renate unleashes explosive rallying cry on Tunisia squad

Just hours after being parachuted in to rescue Tunisia’s faltering World Cup campaign, new head coach Hervé Renard delivered a blistering dressing-room address that laid bare the stakes facing the Carthage Eagles.

The 57-year-old Frenchman, appointed Tuesday after Sabri Lamouchi was sacked following a humiliating 5-1 opening defeat to Sweden, did not mince words as he confronted his squad.

“Do you know how much money people spent to travel all the way here just to support you?! Do you know what will happen if we return home today? The entire world is angry!” Renard roared, according to sources inside the camp.

The emotional outburst came as Renard launched what French media have dubbed an “opération électrochoc” — a shock therapy mission to revive a team on the brink of elimination. With only four days to prepare for Saturday’s must-win Group F clash against Japan, the coach made clear that excuses would not be tolerated.

Renard drew on his own recent humiliation to drive the point home. “I was fired from my job! Just days ago, I was sitting in front of my TV screen watching the World Cup… you cannot imagine what that felt like. You are lucky to be here! So get out there and move, guys!”

The French tactician knows the pain of dismissal firsthand — he was sacked by Saudi Arabia in April, ending his second stint with the Green Falcons just months after guiding them to the 2026 World Cup. That experience, insiders say, fuelled his fury at players who appeared to take their place on football’s biggest stage for granted.

Renard had earlier struck a more measured tone at his introductory press conference, paying tribute to the man he replaced. “I know Sabri personally, and when something like this happens to a coach, I always put myself in his shoes because I’ve experienced it myself in my career, and it hurts a lot,” he told reporters. “He was the one who took responsibility for that defeat.”

But behind closed doors, the urgency was unmistakable. Tunisia’s World Cup hopes hang by a thread after the Sweden debacle, and the federation acted with breathtaking speed to install Renard in a desperate bid to salvage the campaign. The former Zambia and Ivory Coast coach — who won the Africa Cup of Nations with both nations — has been handed a contract through the end of the tournament.

“I did not hesitate to accept Tunisia’s offer,” Renard had said upon arrival. “We still have two matches left and, in football, as long as there is life, there is hope.”

Now, with Japan looming and the Netherlands waiting on June 25, Renard must translate that hope into fire on the pitch. If his locker-room eruption is any indication, the Carthage Eagles have been left in no doubt about what is at stake — for their country, their supporters, and for a coach who knows exactly what it feels like to be sent home in disgrace.
