Spanish full-back Marc Cucurella is preparing to depart Stamford Bridge this summer, with Atletico Madrid emerging as the frontrunner for his signature amid interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid.
According to reports from The Athletic, the 27-year-old is “willing to leave Chelsea after a frustrating season” that saw the club finish 10th in the Premier League . Despite signing a new contract last summer, the former Brighton star is enticed by a return to his homeland, with his representatives actively engaging with several top European clubs .
The Battle for Spain
While Barcelona holds sentimental value for the La Masia graduate—and sporting director Deco has already contacted his camp—financial constraints complicate a move. Manager Hansi Flick admires the player, but the Catalans must offload a current defender before making a formal approach .
Similarly, Real Madrid is monitoring the situation closely. However, reports from the Spanish capital suggest that while the club values his profile, it remains uncertain if they have the financial flexibility to meet Chelsea’s demands this summer .
This hesitation has allowed Atletico Madrid to take pole position. Diego Simeone has made left-back reinforcement a “priority,” and sporting director Mateu Alemany is actively pushing to bring the Spaniard to the Metropolitano .
Chelsea’s Stance
Chelsea is in a robust negotiating position. The Blues are “relaxed” about the situation as Cucurella still has three years left on his contract and was a regular starter in the 2025/26 campaign, featuring in the FIFA Club World Cup final .
However, incoming manager Xabi Alonso—despite reportedly holding talks with Cucurella about staying—is overseeing a significant squad overhaul . With the emergence of young Dutch defender Jorrel Hato, the club views the 28-year-old (who turns 28 in July) as a valuable asset rather than an “untouchable” starter .
Valuation: Reports indicate Chelsea is expected to demand a fee in the region of €50 million to sanction a sale .
