Asante Twum explains rationale behind friendly selection: ‘We’re preparing for England’

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum, has shed light on the thinking behind the Black Stars’ choice of a recent friendly opponent, revealing that the match was deliberately arranged to simulate what the team expects when they face England.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Asante Twum acknowledged that the opponent in question did not qualify for the World Cup, but insisted that their playing style offers a useful preview of the “Three Lions.”

“They’re playing a team that did not qualify for the World Cup, but obviously just to have a fair sense of what England will come up with,” Asante Twum said. “They give us a fair idea of what to expect from the Lions.”

Beyond tactical reconnaissance, the GFA spokesperson noted that the fixture serves a dual purpose: giving the head coach a valuable opportunity to experiment with personnel and formations ahead of more competitive assignments.

“It also gives him the opportunity to look at players in different positions,” he added. “Players who can function in different areas, different patterns of play in attack, defence and midfield. Players who can play in different roles, different setups, different team structures and different team chemistry.”

Asante Twum’s comments underline Ghana’s meticulous approach to squad building as they continue to fine-tune their tactical identity. While England remain a potential benchmark, the Black Stars are focused on developing versatility and depth across all departments—qualities that will be essential when they face top-tier opposition.

The GFA has not yet confirmed the identity of the non‑World Cup side referenced, but the explanation makes clear that results in such friendlies are secondary to the strategic insights gained for future battles, particularly against European heavyweights like England.
