The Deputy National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, has dismissed recent corruption allegations from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as unfounded, arguing that the claims are a desperate political smokescreen.
In a strongly worded rebuttal, Mr. Ako Gunn accused the opposition NPP of remaining stunned by its electoral defeat and attempting to regain public favour through noise rather than substance.
“It is funny that the NPP is still not sure of the reasons for their loss and think by shouting corruption everywhere, it will endear them to the people of Ghana to get them back to power,” he stated.
He described the NPP’s attacks as a classic case of “the pot calling the kettle black,” pointing to what he called the contrast between their current accusations and their own track record in office.
“Sometimes it can be irritating listening to people who sold fertilizers with inscriptions ‘NOT FOR SALE’ telling cocoa farmers they are more committed than the NDC,” Mr. Ako Gunn remarked.
He further questioned the credibility of the NPP’s claims, highlighting their alleged failure to account for major initiatives such as the Gold for Oil programme. “Imagine a group of connection men, who couldn’t account for their Gold for Oil program, accusing the Bank of Ghana and GOLD BOD of selling Ghana’s gold,” he said.
Turning to procurement practices, Mr. Ako Gunn noted that while the NPP now criticises sole sourcing, “98% of their contract awards were through single source.”
Focus on the RESET Agenda
Mr. Ako Gunn urged NDC members to remain composed and focused, emphasising that the electorate is more interested in genuine solutions than partisan bickering. He noted that the expectations of governing are far more demanding than opposition days and called for patience as the party delivers on its promises.
“Let’s focus on our pledge to the people of Ghana and drive them along with our efforts to RESET this nation. This would be the only way to kill their efforts to throw dust in the eyes of the Ghanaian,” he stated.
Inside the NDC’s RESET Agenda
Under President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC has outlined a comprehensive RESET Agenda centred on restoring integrity and driving economic transformation. Key pillars include:
· Operation-Recover-All-Loot: An initiative to investigate and recover state assets lost to corruption.
· Reduced Government: A pledge to cap the number of ministers at 60 to curb wasteful spending.
· Value for Money Office: A proposed independent body to scrutinise procurements above a certain threshold.
· 24-Hour Economy: A policy to encourage three-shift operations, boost productivity and create youth jobs.
· Tax Relief: Plans to scrap the E-levy and COVID-19 levy within the first 100 days.
The NDC also reaffirmed its commitment to the “Big Push” infrastructure programme, aimed at completing abandoned projects and linking rural farms to urban markets.
