The Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) is pushing forward with an ambitious plan to overhaul the Accra International Airport, targeting chronic congestion and aiming to transform the travel experience for millions of passengers.
The current car park at Terminal 3, which accommodates only 513 vehicles, has become a major bottleneckâoften overflowing during peak hours. To solve this, GACL will break ground on a new seven-storey car park in the middle of this year, featuring 2,000 parking bays.
But the project extends far beyond parking. The development will include a 4,000 square metre retail space, effectively creating a shopping mall complete with restaurants. Travellers and aviation enthusiasts will also be treated to a sky view lounge offering unobstructed views of aircraft take-offs and landings.
In a major boost for overnight layovers, the plan includes a two-in-one airport hotelâcomprising a 250-room budget hotel and a separate 120-room luxury hotel, both designed to accommodate passengers from grounded flights. The facility will also house a conference facility and business centre.
The move signals GACLâs intent to position Accra as a premier aviation hub in West Africa, with construction expected to begin mid-year.
