Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong, paramount chief of Asante Akyem Agogo, dies at 87

The Paramount Chief of the Asante Akyem Agogo Traditional Area, Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong, has passed away at the age of 87. The traditional ruler, who was also the father of media personality AJ Sarpong, died late Thursday, March 26, 2026, following a period of illness.

Nana Akuoko Sarpong was enstooled as Omanhene on December 23, 1975, succeeding his uncle, Nana Kwaku Duah. He swore allegiance to the then Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, in January 1976. His reign of more than four decades—47 years as of early 2023—was marked by stability, development, and a strong dedication to traditional governance.

Born on August 11, 1938, the late chief was a lawyer and politician known for his significant contributions to the growth of the Agogo Traditional Area in the Ashanti Region, particularly in agriculture.

His death marks the end of a long era of leadership. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the traditional council in due course.
