IOC bars transgender athletes from female Olympic events in major policy shift

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has enacted a sweeping change to its eligibility framework, formally barring transgender women from competing in female categories at the Olympic Games.

The new policy, announced Thursday, represents one of the most significant regulatory overhauls in the organization’s history. Under the updated rules, athletes who were assigned male at birth are no longer eligible to participate in women’s events, including the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

As part of the revised framework, the IOC will implement eligibility screening, which may include genetic or biological sex testing, to determine qualification for female categories. Officials stated that the changes are designed to preserve competitive balance and address longstanding debates regarding fairness in women’s sports.

Athletes who do not meet the new criteria will be required to compete in male or open categories, depending on the structure of their respective sport. The IOC has directed all international sports federations to align their regulations with the updated standards in preparation for future Olympic cycles.

The decision has drawn sharp divisions globally. Supporters argue the measure strengthens fairness and integrity in women’s competition, while critics contend it undermines inclusion and significantly restricts opportunities for transgender athletes at the elite level.

Sports governing bodies are now expected to review their own eligibility policies in response to the directive. The shift is poised to remain a central point of contention as preparations continue for future Games, reigniting debate over the balance between fairness, science, and inclusion in international sport.
