Family abandons 13-year-old girl with hole-in- heart condition in Central Region

Florence Acquah alleges she has been isolated and labelled a witch by relatives and classmates

A 13-year-old girl suffering from a hole-in-heart condition has reportedly been abandoned by her family and rejected by her community in Ajumako Bisease in the Central Region.

Florence Acquah, who has dropped out of school, claims her classmates and some family members have labelled her a witch, leading to her isolation from those around her.

The young girl, who requires urgent medical care, told GhOne News that her health has deteriorated to the point where she cannot walk for 30 minutes or perform basic tasks independently.

“My former friends have rejected me. I am waiting to die because I have been rejected by the community,” Florence said.

She has made an appeal to the government, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and non-governmental organisations to intervene and provide her with support.

“I need financial support to fund my life-saving medication,” she stated.

Her mother, Christiana Acquah, who is herself an autism patient, has also joined the appeal for public assistance.

The case highlights the vulnerability of children with medical conditions who face stigmatisation within their own communities.
