Kokontr packed with iodine, can help prevent ulcers–University lecturer

A senior lecturer at the University of Cape Coast has highlighted the medicinal benefits of Kokonte, the traditional Ghanaian cassava meal, noting its potential to prevent and manage ulcers.

Albert Bondzi-Simpson of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism revealed that the locally prepared staple contains high levels of iodine, making it an effective dietary choice for individuals with gastric issues.

“Eat it continuously, at least two times a week. You don’t need to go to the doctor for ulcers or minor ulcers. You can even eat it without soup,” Bondzi-Simpson stated during an interview with Citi FM’s Heritage Month programme on Indigenous Food Staples.

The lecturer further emphasised the nutritional value of cassava, particularly the root, noting that his research revealed the presence of protein and essential mineral nutrients in the crop.

He encouraged the incorporation of cassava-based meals into regular diets, highlighting their versatility and health benefits.
